In 2006, as a docent at the Singapore Art Museum, Vinata had an opportunity to be introduced to clay by the Master Potter Iskandar Jalil. She completed a certificate course in Sculpture with Yeo Chee Kiong at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore in 2007. She was invited to study further with Iskandar Jalil in 2008 at his studio at the Malay Heritage Centre, Singapore. Since 2009 she works out of Jalan Bahar Clay Studios. Her preferred technique is hand building using textured slabs.
A recurrent theme in my work since 2008, is bags, especially ladies hand bags. I am fascinated by the variety of the ubiquitous bags we use everyday. A bag is not just a bag – it reflects the personality of the owner and is a strong personal statement.
The other enduring interest I have is the human face –the variety of shapes we come in and the myriad expressions we wear, are a source of endless inspiration to create artwork.
